The Medicines Verification System protects patients from falsified medicines.
Nomvec is in charge of maintaining and developing the Norwegian Medicines Verification System. We work to secure the whole legal supply chain from falsified medicines. From February 2019 safety features (2D matrix code and anti-tampering device) have been required on all prescription medicines packaging in Europe, enabling the packs to be authenticated as genuine prior to supply to patients. For a pharmacy to dispense or a pharma wholesaler to distribute medicines, they must be connected to the Norwegian Medicines Verification System. The verification system is linked to the entire pharmaceutical supply chain and aims to prevent falsification from entering the legal supply chain.
European Medicines Verification Organisation (EMVO) manages the central “European hub” that connects all the national data repositories in Europe and serves as the platform to allow the authenticity of medicines anywhere in the supply chain in the EU to be verified.
The safety features
All prescription medicine packs must contain these safety features:
The pack includes features that shows that the pack has not been opened.
The unique information on the 2D matrix code on the pack consists of the unique serial number, the product code, the batch number and the expiry date.
